The Art of Coaching: The Essential Skills Every Good Sports Coach Should Possess

Essential coaching skills

I am taking a liberty here to talk about one of my greatest passions in life, coaching.
I was never an athlete, not an elite one at least, but I am currently a coach, my sport of choice is football, as in soccer, I hold a PRO License and I have close to 6 years of experience coaching teams of all ages in 3 different countries, and let me just say, I love coaching.

By working with some truly extraordinary people, I have experienced first-hand the impact that a great coach can have on a team. A coach’s ability to lead, communicate, and motivate can make all the difference in the success of a team. Here, I will talk about what are, in my opinion, some of the essential skills that every great sports coach should possess.

Introduction to Coaching in Sports

Coaching is an integral part of sports. It involves guiding and directing athletes to achieve their goals. A coach’s role goes beyond just teaching techniques and strategies. Firstly because we don’t teach technique, we provide an environment where the athlete keeps developing it, because techniques always improve. Secondly, because strategy is always changing, it is dependent of our opponent. The way we play however, it is non-negotiable, what we know as “playing philosophy”.

We are responsible for creating a positive team culture, a good learning environment, establishing team goals, and developing our athletes both on and off the field.

The Importance of Coaching Skills

Coaching skills are essential for any coach who wants to be successful, and to be successful does not mean only winning, to be successful means providing your team with what they need to improve. Most of the coaches out there coach their children’s teams, or community teams who don’t really compete for glory, but they are extremely important

because they teach the foundations of the athletes development.

The ability to lead, communicate, and motivate our athletes can make all the difference in the success of our team. A coach’s skills are not only essential for our athletes but also for our own personal growth and development. The better a coach’s skills, the more success they can achieve.

Top Attributes of a Sports Coach

There are several attributes that every great sports coach should possess. These include leadership, communication, and motivation. A coach who has these attributes can inspire their athletes to achieve their goals, overcome obstacles, and succeed both on and off the field.

Leadership is a critical attribute for a sports coach. A coach must find his way to lead his team, must be able to set clear expectations, and create a positive team culture. They must be able to make tough decisions and take responsibility for their actions.

Communication is another essential attribute for a sports coach. A coach must be able to communicate effectively with their athletes, assistants, and other coaches, as well as his players, club committees and don’t forget, the parents. We must be able to give clear instructions and provide feedback to help our athletes improve.

Motivation is the third attribute that every great sports coach should possess. A coach must be able to motivate his athletes to work hard, stay focused, and push through difficult times. A motivated team can achieve great things, and a coach’s ability to inspire and encourage their athletes is critical to their success.

Once, one of my teachers asked us “what is coaching?” and we all came up with several, yet pretty much the same answer, “coaching is going to training every day to improve what we do”, but he said something we weren’t expecting, he said “coaching is convincing, is convincing your players they are good, and that what we are doing to improve is the way to succeed, while actually working to improve”. It stuck with me.

Characteristics of an Effective Sports Coach

In addition to the top attributes, an effective coach should possess several characteristics like knowledge, adaptability, and positivity.

Knowledge is essential for a coach to be effective. A coach must have a deep understanding of the sport they are coaching, including the rules, techniques, and strategies. They must also be knowledgeable about their athletes’ strengths and weaknesses, as well as their opponents. Know your game!!!!

Adaptability is another critical characteristic for a coach. A coach must be able to adapt to changing circumstances, such as injuries, weather, or game situations. They must be able to make quick decisions and adjust their strategies accordingly. This adds up to being organised and planning your games, you should face your challenges with plans A, B, C all the way to Z.

Positivity is the third characteristic that every effective sports coach should possess. A coach must maintain a positive attitude, even in the face of adversity. They must be able to encourage their athletes and maintain morale, even during difficult times.

Coaching Techniques

There are several coaching techniques that every great sports coach should use. These include goal-setting, feedback, and teamwork. I will dive deeper into techniques and styles in a different post, in the meantime this provides a good understanding of what coaches should do.

Goal-setting is essential for a coach to help their athletes achieve success. A coach must set clear, achievable goals that motivate their athletes to work hard and improve. This is hugely important, if you set the bar to low the athletes will get bored soon, but on the other hand, if you set a goal to high, you’ll only frustrate them, a goal should be challenging but achievable for your team and should be hand-in-hand with personal goals of your athletes.

Feedback is an essential coaching technique. A coach must provide constructive feedback to help their athletes improve their performance. They must also be able to receive feedback from their athletes and other coaches to help them improve their coaching skills. As a coach you cannot be afraid to have tough conversations, athletes value honesty above all things, be ready to say and hear some hard truths during your journey.

Teamwork is the third coaching technique that every great sports coach should use. A coach must create a positive team culture and foster teamwork among their athletes. They must encourage their athletes to work together, support each other, and communicate effectively. But don’t forget that you are also part of a team, your coaching staff, and the same principles apply.

Developing Coaching Skills

Developing coaching skills is an ongoing process. We can improve our skills through education, experience, and mentorship. Although all of this is true, I think that the best way to develop our skills is with our feet in the mud, education and mentorship are great, but you never truly learn until you experience it in the flesh.

Education is essential for coaches, we need to stay up to date with the developments of our sport.

Experience is another critical factor in developing coaching skills. We can learn a great deal from our experiences, both positive and negative. They can reflect on their successes and failures and identify areas for improvement. I find, and I think most coaches will agree with me, that where we do most of learning is in defeat, it is rare, yet oddly gratifying to learn lessons from a victory.

Mentorship is the third way coaches can develop their skills. Coaches can seek out mentorship from experienced coaches who can provide guidance, feedback, and support, if you are a young coach, or not even young, but just starting, this a great way to learn the ropes. That way, after a while, you can mentor other coaches to develop your leadership skills and give back to the coaching community.

Tools and Resources for Improving Coaching Skills

There are several tools and resources that you as a coach can use to improve your coaching skills. These include books, podcasts, and courses.

Books are an excellent resource for coaches to learn about new techniques, strategies, and best practices in coaching. Some recommended books for coaches include “The Score Takes Care of Itself” by Bill Walsh, “Wooden on Leadership” by John Wooden, and “Mind Gym” by Gary Mack.

Podcasts are another great resource for coaches. Some recommended podcasts for coaches include “The Coach’s Podcast,” “The Winning Youth Coaching Podcast,” and “The Coaching Journey Podcast.”

Courses are also a great way for coaches to improve their skills. Some recommended courses for coaches include the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), the United States Sports Academy, and the International Coaching Federation (ICF).

Challenges Faced by Sports Coaches

Coaching can be a challenging profession. Coaches must navigate a range of challenges, including managing conflicts and dealing with pressure.

Managing conflicts is a common challenge for coaches. We must be able to manage conflicts between our athletes, assistants, and other coaches. They must be able to create a positive team culture and foster teamwork, even when conflicts arise.

Dealing with pressure is another common challenge for coaches. We must be able to handle the pressure of competition, the expectations of our athletes and fans, and the scrutiny of the media. We must be able to maintain our composure and focus on the task at hand.

If you, like me, like competitive sports, pressure is a given, and not only you should be able to handle it, you should love it, and thrive with it.
